Plenty of Cargo Space
When you need your Explorer for carrying lots of cargo, you'll find it's more than up to the task. The 5-passenger Explorer provides a maximum 85.8 cu. ft. of cargo space with the rear seat backs lowered (83.7 cu. ft. in 7-passenger model). In the 5-passenger Explorer with 2nd-row seat backs in upright position, you still have 45.1 cu. ft. to carry a lot of belongings. Cargo and load capacity are limited by weight and weight distribution.

DVD Entertainment System
The available DVD Entertainment System makes getting to wherever you're going a lot more fun. The system comes with an 8" color LCD screen, two sets of wireless headphones and a remote control.

4.6L V8 Engine
Explorer is up for any adventure on the agenda. The available 4.6L V8 engine features three valves per cylinder plus dual-equal variable cam timing. Teamed with a 6-speed automatic transmission, it cranks out 292 hp, 315 lb.-ft. of torque and impressive 15 city/21 highway fuel economy (EPA-estimated 15 city/21 hwy mpg, 4x2. Actual mileage will vary).

6-Speed Automatic Transmission
The optional 4.6L 3-valve-per-cylinder V8 is teamed with a 6-speed transmission that features a wide span of gear ratios across the six speeds, providing responsive acceleration at the low end and enhanced fuel economy at the overdrive 6th gear.

4WD or AWD
Whether you're battling the elements or navigating construction zones, Explorer has you covered. The available Control Trac® 4WD System delivers sure-footed control on any road. Choose the 4x4 AUTO setting for everyday driving. Kick it up to 4x4 HIGH when you need extra traction, such as on icy roads or in snow. Or choose 4x4 LOW for serious off-road ventures. Explorer also offers an optional All-Wheel Drive (AWD) System. AWD is a full-time, fully automatic system that instantly delivers torque to the wheels needing it most. It's available on Explorer XLT Sport, Eddie Bauer® and Limited. Optional 20" polished aluminum wheels are required.

5-Star Safety
Explorer has received NHTSA's 5-star crash test rating* for all four crash seating positions (driver and right front passenger for frontal crash, and front and rear seating positions for side-impact). Explorer helps protect you with its standard Intelligent Safety System™ and standard front seat side airbags.
*Star ratings are part of the U.S. Department of Transportation's Safercar.gov program (www.safercar.gov).

Towing Capacity
Bring your favorite recreation vehicles with you on your next trek. When properly equipped, Explorer 4X2 has a maximum towing capacity of 7,285 lbs., and you'll feel more handling confidence while on the road with Explorer's new Trailer Sway Control feature that works with the AdvanceTrac® with Roll Stability Control™ System. It uses a sensor that measures yaw motion to determine if the trailer is swaying. If necessary, precise braking is applied or engine torque adjusted to help bring both vehicle and trailer under control.

Trailer Sway Control
The new Trailer Sway Control feature works with the AdvanceTrac® with Roll Stability Control™ (RSC®) System, using the sensor that measures yaw motion to determine if the trailer is swaying. If necessary, Trailer Sway Control applies precise braking or adjusted engine torque to help bring both vehicle and trailer under control. Trailer Sway Control joins the already impressive list of standard safety features on Ford Explorer for 2009.

PowerFold™ 3rd Row Seat
The class-exclusive PowerFold™ 3rd-row 50/50 split-folding seat* folds flat at the touch of a button. It's optional on Explorer Eddie Bauer and standard in Limited. The 2nd-row seats fold and tumble to provide easy access to the 3rd-row seating.
*Class is Mid-size SUV.

Intelligent Safety System™
